Zahnd & Kormann ZK No.1, probably the most affordable Swiss Made Triple Calendar Moonphase Chronograph

Mechanical watches with several complications are highly venerable, and undoubtedly, comes at higher price tag when its branded “Swiss Made”. While many will just come to conclusion that complication watches are beyond their reach, but definitely not Roger Zahnd and Florian Kormann from Bern, Switzerland. The two friends set out on their horological journey to bringing the best value possible to watch enthusiasts, and eventually formed Zahnd & Kormann, a watch brand with a vision to offer high quality Swiss Made timepieces in the most transparent and modern way.

Zahnd & Kormann’s debut watch collection is the ZK No.1, an automatic dress watch featuring three distinct complications: Triple Calendar, Moonphase and Chronograph. These are the kind of complications you find in haute horlogerie brands like Jaeger LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Phillippe. Some may argue that it is still possible find such complications in a mid-range brand like Longines, but the Longines Master Collection will still cost you thousands of dollars. The founders of Zahnd & Kormann recognise that many other watch brands typically add a three to five times mark-up to their products, and in true transparency, they kept the ZK No.1 at a maximum mark-up of just two times.

ZK No.1 features a 41mm 316L stainless steel case with AR coated sapphire crystal and comes in four unique variants: Blue Moon, Black Moon, Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse, each with a different strap and dial.

One of the most mesmerising feature of the ZK No.1 is the extremely legible and contrasting dial. Texts are kept to its minimal and at a glance, it is pretty easy to see the time and the other complications. Amongst the four variants, the Black Moon stood out prominently with its black PVD case and midnight blue subdials.

Case thickness is a little on the high side at 13.6mm but it is definitely not a deal-breaker for a complications dress watch. Just look at the IWC Portugieser 7 Days Automatic with a case thickness of 14.5mm!

Powering the ZK No.1 is the legendary ETA 7751 Valjoux self-winding calibre, a top end movement with day, date, month, moonphase and a 1/8-second chronograph (up to 12 hours). It is a top grade movement, not standard, which means it has been adjusted to five positions to ensure accuracy and consistency. The movement comes with a custom rotor with Côtes de Genève, as well as blue screws and pearl brush finishing, all visible through the sapphire crystal display caseback.

The ZK No.1 comes with two genuine leather watch strap of choice which features quick release spring bars that would not require spring bar tool for strap change. For those seeking an adventurous look, its 20mm lug-to-lug width makes it easy for aftermarket straps.
